Recently, the state of Montana decided to redraft several regulations that were proposed regarding the methods of disposal of radioactive oil waste in response to the expressed concern of the public.

The Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is writing and releasing its first publication addressing the statewide regulatory guidelines for the disposing of technologically enhanced, naturally occurring radioactive materials (TENORM). The first draft was released last year.

DEQ spokesperson Rebecca Harbage said members of the public had singled out an issue with the regulations that cause potential problems within the state, according to Montana Public Radio.

“That seemed as though it might be creating an incentive for companies to bring their waste across the border into Montana if there was a legal avenue for them to dispose of it here and not in North Dakota, for example,” she said.
